Why Has Labor Not Demanded Guaranteed Employment?

Unemployment has almost always been traumatic for its victims. In earlier times, it threatened extreme privation, if not starvation. Still today, dramatically decreases victims’ standard of living, human capital, social standing, and self-respect. It is associated with poorer health, family dissolution, suicide. also entails considerable costs to society such as lost output, increased crime, decayed neighborhoods, when extreme, political unrest. Why, then, tolerated? especially, have workers their advocates demanded that employment be guaranteed all? This article explores why what foremost workers’ interests—security employment—has only rarely resulted in a demand employment. Although many employed might feel job-secure thus see little need employment, all are vulnerable the overpoweringly seductive dominant ideology serving interests owners means production blames unemployed fate, creating hostility very idea history how this served block creation basic right work.
